Making Music in Milwaukee

October 27, 2008

When I went to school (many, many years ago) music class was mandatory and everybody had to play the recorder whether you had a musical bone in your body or if you were completely tone-deaf. Today many schools offer music as an elective or sadly, it is not offered at all.

If you have a budding Mozart on your hands or you are looking for ways to foster a love of music in your family that extends beyond The Wheels on the Bus you may be interested in the Early Childhood Program offered by the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.

Classes are available from the age of 4 months to 4 years of age and include:

Conservatory Babies (for children 4-23 months) is a program designed to introduce the basics of music featuring songs, rhymes, finger plays, bounces, wiggles and (YES!) Lullabies.

Conservatory Tots (for ages 24-35 months) will help your toddler develop motor skills through singing, creative movement, listening, instrument exploration and playing percussion instruments.

Conservatory Kids (for pre-schoolers 3-4 years) allows your child to experience and learn musical concepts as well as develop tonal and rhythm skills through music, literature and art. Each child is encouraged to participate at his/her own level in singing, movement, listening and instrument exploration. Classes are offered in a ten week or twelve week schedule.

As your children grow the Conservatory is an excellent resource offering individual instruction, instrument rentals, summer camps and winter carnivals. All Styles of music are taught and encouraged; classical, jazz, rock, folk, blues, and "world-beat".

Classes are offered in three locations (Fox Point, East Side and Brookfield).  For more information visit the website for the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music here.
