Classic Reads

November 07, 2008

Being the parent of two little boys, I have read more than my fair share of books about trucks, fire engines and race cars. (Not to mention bull dozers, trains and helicopters.)

We still read plenty of stories about things that go, but at each trip to the library, I am trying to incorporate some of the oldies but goodies into my son's reading rotation.

Here are some of the classics that I remember fondly from my childhood that we have checked out recently:

1.  George and Martha by James Marshall. I love the dynamic between these two and the emphasis on respect for each other's feelings.

2. Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lober. A great book about friendship.

3. Richard Scarry's Busy Busy Town. The illustrations tell their own story in this wonderfully animated book.

4. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendk. Fantasy comes to life on these pages.

5. Really Rosie also by Maurice Sendk.  Dressed in her long red gown and big floppy hat, Rosie really sparks your imagination.

What books do you want to make sure and share with your children?
